Grow the Future Leaders of Your Firm
Every firm faces a long-term challenge: How to help their talented young professionals grow into confident project leaders?
Graduates enter practice with very limited exposure to the business aspects of the profession, yet these are precisely the competencies required for long-term advancement.
Most firms try to address this gap through informal mentoring and continuing education seminars. While well-intentioned, these efforts are often constrained by time.
As a result, many professionals learn the business of practice the traditional way: They figure it out by trial and error, as they work on real projects. They make plenty of costly and stressful mistakes along the way, and the hard-won lessons accumulate only slowly and unevenly. Competence often arrives only after many years.
Firm Foundations is a pioneering business education program for young professionals that offers a faster, easier and less expensive alternative.

Program Structure
Format
Firm Foundations is a nine-month online professional development program. Participants may join from anywhere in the continental United States.
Time Commitment
Participants engage for a limited number of hours per week. Program work is structured to be completed outside standard business hours and does not require a reduction in billable time.
Teaching Method
The program combines concise instructional material, guided discussion, and personalized feedback with hands-on, experience-based learning. Participants adopt the roles of project leaders and office leaders. Rather than hand participants the reins of a real project, they practice these roles in simulations that model the business and leadership dimensions of practice in a controlled environment.
Learning Experience
Firm Foundations functions as a professional rehearsal space. Participants encounter situations comparable to on-the-job challenges, with the freedom to test strategies, refine decision-making, and gradually build well-earned confidence.
Cost
Current program pricing is available on the Apply page. Sponsorship options and multi-participant arrangements are available upon request.
Strategic Partnerships
HCAI collaborates with architecture firms to support long-term staff development. Partnership models range from sponsoring individual participants to establishing recurring annual cohorts. We welcome conversations about how Firm Foundations can complement your firm’s mentoring culture.
